Mold is a fungi that reproduces by releasing tiny spores into the air. There are literally thousands of different kinds of mold that we encounter every day. Now stachybotrys is much different and also referred to as black mold and toxic black mold.

This is a type of mold that produces hazardous byproducts, called mycotoxins. It is thought people with asthma and respiratory problems may have reactions to many different types of mold, yet stachybotrys will affect perfectly healthy individuals.

This type of mold is a slimy, greenish-black mold that grows on moisture covered materials that contain cellulose, such as wood, paper drywall and other stuff similar. Mold in your home to be a problem does not have to be toxic mold. Regular mold will call issues as well as it grows on organic materials and if is left to grow will destroy them.

It is true that all types of mold thrive in damp humid conditions; here are a few places where it’s common:

  • Bathrooms with poor ventilation. Install an exhaust fan if possible.
  • Leaky water pipes. Repair them immediately.
  • Roof leaks. Repair them right away
  • Flood aftermath. Repair as soon as possible.
  • Clothes dryer and exhaust fans that vent under the house or back into the room. Vent them to the outside

So now we know there are many different types of mold, yet it is true that mold can be prevented by some very easy steps. A good place to start is to try to discourage the mold from even starting. You can accomplish this by not giving it a breeding ground.

Here are a few things to do to try to discourage the growth of mold:

  • Install a dehumidifier in chronically moist rooms
  • Don’t carpet rooms that stay damp
  • Insulate pipes and other cold surfaces to discourage condensation
  • Install storm windows to eliminate condensation on glass
  • Cover crawlspace dirt with plastic and ensure that the area is well ventilated

These are just a few things to do to try to prevent mold from starting. It’s always best to try to prevent something from happening. Yet the main thing to remember is if you have stachybotrys in your home you need to deal with them immediately.
